Everlasting Peace

“He shall judge between the nations, and rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”

Isaiah 2:4 (KJV).

Human has been longing for lasting peace only to be disappointed for there are always wars or conflicts brewing or happening somewhere. Isaiah 2 is clearly a prophecy belonging to future times because this verse has not yet been accomplished in any sense.

In a literal sense, although there was an universal peace when Rome ruled most of the known world around the time of the birth of Christ (Pax Romana), there are were always rebellions that broke out in their empire. Afterward, Jesus foretold there would be wars and rumors of wars, and nation shall rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. Even today, the Ukraine-Russia war is still ongoing and humans are still longing for that everlasting peace.

In a spiritual sense, although Christ has made peace by His blood on the cross, the gospel is preached and believers have more peaceable disposition having been reconciled to God and to one another, there are always disagreements among the people of God. This happens between different denominations or even in the same local church.

In the future glory when Christ returns with His full glory, He will judge over all the nations. In the spiritual reign of Christ, this prophecy will be fulfilled in every sense. This will be after the Hour of Tribulation, after the Battle of Armageddon, after the beast and the false prophet taken and casted into the Lake of Fire. There will be no more war in the world nor any persecution of the saints; and then the peaceable kingdom of Christ will appear. In this time, everyone will live in harmony. They shall not envy nor contend with one another. This is the everlasting peace prophesied in Isaiah 2.

“Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”
