What has been is what will be,
and what has been done is what will be done,
and there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there a thing of which it is said,
“See, this is new”?
It has been already
in the ages before us.
Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 (ESV)
Keeping up with artificial intelligence news nowadays is like being on a thrilling rollercoaster—there’s always something new and exciting! Every day, we hear about the latest advancements from big players like OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Anthropic. Just last week, Anthropic launched Claude 3, OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, Google unveiled Gemini 1.5, and Microsoft announced their AI-powered Copilot PC. Plus, many startups and big companies are creating amazing AI tools for writing, coding, pictures, music, and videos. As an engineer, if keeping up with the news is already a challenge, how can I master this technology?
While I am worrying about keeping up with all the information, many people worry about losing their jobs to AI or question its safety. But history shows that new technologies often bring more opportunities. The author of Ecclesiastes said, “there is nothing new under the sun,” yet Generative AI is making a big splash. As a Christian, how should we approach this advancement?
In the past, innovations like cars and computers changed our world. At first, some jobs disappeared, but new ones were created, and life became easier. AI will follow a similar path. While there may be some challenges, the benefits will be great.
Every tool has its downsides. Cars can make us less active, the internet has its problems, and smartphones can be addictive. AI will have its issues too. But we can manage these wisely. Just like we exercise more because we drive, use online security tools, and limit screen time, we will find ways to handle AI’s impacts.
The key is to use AI wisely, enjoy its benefits, and be aware of its downsides. By doing so, we can make the most of this technology. For example, I use it to create the base graphics for church newsletter or make articles such as this sound more upbeat.
