“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us” Romans 5:8 (NIV).
There’s a three-letter word that has a rather negative connotation. No, it’s not the word, “bad” or “mad”. It is “but”. According to the dictionary, “but” is a conjunction that is used to introduce a word, phrase or clause that contrasts with what has already been mentioned like, “I’m sorry, but … “
There is a reason that we are advised not to say “but”, especially when we are apologizing. This is because whatever we say after the “but” is negating the actual apology. We are presenting an excuse, a plea to try to understand our own thoughts, emotions, motives or even point out the other person’s faults whichundermines that person and invalidates them. There are many times I have to stop myself from saying “but” after I apologize.
We can use “but” as a positive connecting word, if it contradicts a previous negative statement. The simplest way that we as believers can do so is by declaring only two words – but God! These two words together create such a powerful statement.
The Scriptures has numerous verses with “but God” in them. In fact, the whole Bible testifies to “but God”. The gospel is a “but God” testament. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8 (NIV).
Stories in the Bible recount “but God” moments, when God steps in and intervenes for His people. He still does so for us, today. I’m sure there are many struggles that we are all facing right now, however big or small, they may be, but God reminds us to not fear or be dismayed because He is with us (Isaiah 41:10) and He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deut. 31:8). He invites us to come to Him and He will give us rest (Matt. 11:28).
When you are overwhelmed with stress, anxiety, fear and worry – but God!
When you are saddened by the death of a loved one – but God!
When you are crushed by the weight of failure… when you don’t get the promotion or the job you wanted – but God!
“but God has surely listened and has heard my prayer” Psalm 66:19.
What are the overpowering problems and formidable fears that are burdening you? Let us declare “but God” and preach His truth that we glean from His Word to ourselves.
