Cast your burden upon the LORD and He shall sustain you…

(Psalm 55:22a, NASB95).

All of us at one time or another have been in situations where we feel like we cannot go on any further. It could be an illness or relationship. At times, it gets really hard to put one foot in front of the other. Our energies are drained and the spirit to persevere has all but abandoned us.

In this great psalm we find a precious encouragement from the Lord. He uses the word “sustain”. Literally, it means to support and hold up. This is one of the many attributes of God. “Surely God is my help; the Lord is one who sustains me.” (Psalm 54:4, NIV).

God’s grace and mercies keeps us in the game of life and all of the challenges that come with it.

Dr. David Jeremiah puts it very succinctly, “If we believe in a Creator-God, we must also believe in a Sustainer-God.”

For example, when it comes to the necessities of life, we don’t have to worry or be anxious about having them. Notice Jesus’ words of encouragement in Matthew 6:25, “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” (NASB95).

As our “sustainer” God will provide as we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NASB95).

Trust in the Lord, your sustainer. You’ll have everything you need – and often times, usually more.
