The Trinity: God The Holy Spirit

This article is Part 3 of a three-part series on the Trinity. A March 30, 2025 www.christianpost.com article detailed that only around 11% of American Christians hold a Biblical view of the Trinity. I hope everyone who reads this article is in that percentage.

Let’s review:

The Christian doctrine of the Trinity is:

  • There is only one God, one divine nature and being.
  • This one divine Being is tripersonal, involving the distinctions of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • These three are joint partakers of the same nature and majesty of God.[1]

God is one in His essence, but three in Person.[2] Based on biblical teaching, the traditional Christian confession is that God is One in Three and Three in One.[3] For the human mind, this three in oneness is a difficult to comprehend mystery, but the Bible clearly reveals God as a Trinity of divine Persons existing in perfect unity.[4]

The members of the Trinity have roles and activities. Sometimes they operate together, and sometimes they work separately.

Within the Trinity the Father is head, first among equals; the Son and the Holy Spirit do the Father’s will, glorifying Him and making Him known; and the Holy Spirit glorifies and makes known the Son.[5]

On a radio program, a Christian teacher stated: God the Father plans, God the Son performs, and God the Holy Spirit perfects.[6]

The Holy Spirit does many things. The following conveys some aspects of His activities. These descriptions are not exhaustive.

God the Holy Spirit:

The Holy Spirit is a “He,” not an “it.”[7] The Holy Spirit is a Person, not a vague power or impersonal force.[8] He is the Christian’s constant companion. The Holy Spirit lives in all those who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Most modern Bible translations call the Spirit of God the Holy Spirit. Some older translations refer to Him as the Holy Ghost.

Baptized us

For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13).

Conceived Jesus

The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:35).

Convicts

8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. (John 16:8-11).

Empowers

7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; 8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:7, 8).

Gives every believer in Christ a spiritual gift for serving

But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. (1 Corinthians 12:11).

Guides

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” (John 16:13).

Indwells Believers

Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.

(2 Timothy 1:14).

Intercedes/Prays for Believers

26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; 27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:26, 27)

Resurrected Jesus

But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans 8:11).

Teaches

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” (John 14:26).

Testifies (Bears Witness About Jesus)

26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me, 27and you will testify also, because you have been with Me from the beginning. (John 15:26, 27).

Wrote Scripture

20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Peter 1:20, 21).

This month, in your prayer time, give thanks to God the Holy Spirit, for the many ways He has worked, and continues to work.
