So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. – 2 Corinthians 5:9
How often do we try to please our parents, only to fail because it’s not what they expected? Or how often do our own children do the same to us?
The apostle Paul had one main goal in life: to make please his Lord and Savior. That’s something every true Christian wants—to please God. And the Bible shows us clearly how we can do that.
For example, being kind and sharing what we have makes pleases God:
“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Hebrews 13:16; see also Philippians 4:18)
Even children have a way to please God:
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.” (Colossians 3:20)
When children listen to their parents, it brings joy to God.
And for grown-ups, especially when life is hard, we can still choose to honor God:
“3Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.” (2 Timothy 2:3-4)
Staying strong and focused on Jesus, even when it’s tough, is pleasing to God too.
Paul also wrote about giving our whole lives to God:
“1I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[b] 2Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2) This means giving God our best, not conforming to the world, but letting Him change the way we think and live.
The message in all these verses is simple: if we want to please God, we should use our time, gifts, and lives to serve Him well. “Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable (well pleasing) to God and approved by men.” (Romans 14:18)
This is the kind of life that honors God. And one day, if we live like this, we’ll hear the most wonderful words of all: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Matthew 25:21)
