This article is Part 2 of a three-part series on the Trinity. Last month’s article was on God the Father.
Let’s review:
The Christian doctrine of the Trinity is:
- There is only one God, one divine nature and being.
- This one divine Being is tripersonal, involving the distinctions of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- These three are joint partakers of the same nature and majesty of God.[1]
God is one in His essence, but three in Person.[2] Based on biblical teaching, the traditional Christian confession is that God is One in Three and Three in One.[3] For the human mind, this three in oneness is a difficult to comprehend mystery, but the Bible clearly reveals God as a Trinity of divine Persons existing in perfect unity.[4]
The members of the Trinity have roles and activities. Sometimes they operate together, and sometimes they work separately.
Within the Trinity the Father is head, first among equals; the Son and the Holy Spirit do the Father’s will, glorifying Him and making Him known; and the Holy Spirit glorifies and makes known the Son.[5]
On a radio program, a Christian teacher stated: God the Father plans, God the Son performs, and God the Holy Spirit perfects.[6]
The Lord Jesus Christ, God the Son, does many things. The following conveys some aspects of His activities. These descriptions are not exhaustive.
God the Son:
Savior
We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world (1 John 4:14).
Christ the Lord
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11).
A Friend to His Followers (Jesus speaking)
“You are My friends if you do what I command you.” (John 15:14).
Does the Father’s Will (Jesus speaking).
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (John 6:38).
High Priest
Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man. (Hebrews 8:1, 2).
Honors God the Father
Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me” (John 8:49).
Judge
22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him ” (John 5:21, 22).
Mediator
5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time. (1 Timothy 2:5, 6).
Messiah
He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ) (John 1:41).
Reveals the Father
8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (John 14:8, 9).
The Way, the Truth, and the Life
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6).
As you can see, God the Son loves people and is very active in the universe. The Bible details much more about Him than the examples listed here.
If God wills, next month I plan to focus on some roles and activities of God the Holy Spirit.
This month, in your prayer time, give thanks to God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, for the many ways He has worked, and continues to work.
