Metamorphosis

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2

At an early age at school, I was fascinated with science. One of the early lessons taught to us was the phase of transformation that a butterfly goes through to become a butterfly. You remember the phase, don’t you?

One writer eloquently describes the transformations to become a butterfly this way, “An adult female lays an egg on a plant; the egg hatches and reveals a larva which feeds on the host plant becoming a caterpillar; the caterpillar spins a cocoon around itself; the caterpillar changes into a butterfly in the cocoon and emerges.”

Spiritually, as a believer we should go through a transformation too. The Greek word translated “transformed” in Romans 12:2 is “metamorphosis”. The change that God wants to happen to His people is a change from a worldly person to a spiritual one, to become a person who is more like God’s only begotten Son, Jesus (Romans 8:29).

How this transformation happens is by the Spirit of God, using the Word of God to change the way we think and act. Therefore, an important element in our transformation to become more like Jesus is how much time and attention we give to the Word of God. The more we study, reflect, and apply the Word of God in our lives will determine how fast and how much we’ll change.

How are you doing in your transformation to be more like Jesus Christ? The Word of God plays a huge role in our transformation or metamorphosis.
