Good Examples

On July 4th, Sound of Freedom, a movie highlighting the danger and scale of human trafficking, especially children, around the world was released. In this movie, Matthew 18:6 was used: “but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” The purpose of this verse in the movie is to show that justice is coming for those who trafficked children. The verses in context is as follows:

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. – Matthew 18:1-6 ESV

These verses also teach that as parents, educators, and role models, it is our responsibility to impart valuable life lessons to the children around us. Children are like sponges, soaking up knowledge from their surroundings and learning through observation. To guide them on the path of righteousness and compassion, we must lead by example using words, actions, and decisions.

1. Words: The Power of Kindness and Encouragement

Children are highly influenced by the language they hear, and as adults, we must use our words to uplift, encourage, and show kindness.

2. Actions: Living with Integrity and Compassion

As the saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” Children are keen observers and tend to mimic the behavior they witness. It is crucial, therefore, to model integrity, honesty, and compassion in our daily lives.

3. Decisions: Making Ethical and Responsible Choices

Our decisions often shape the course of our lives, and they can have a profound impact on the children who observe us. In Matthew 18:1-6, Jesus warns against causing harm to innocent souls. It is essential to demonstrate the importance of making ethical and responsible choices.

As we strive to be positive role models, let us remember the profound impact our words, actions, and decisions can have on the children in our lives.
